Vernal Pool Tour

Date: Saturday, April 18, 2026
Time: 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

Meeting Location: 3099 Powder Mill Road, Adelphi, MD 20783 (map) - we will meet in the parking lot

Event Description: Join the Anacostia Watershed Society for a Vernal Pool Tour at Powder Mill Community Park! Vernal pools are temporary seasonal pools of water that provide habitat for specialized species like wood frogs and spotted salamanders. If you'd like to get closer to the vernal pools to checkout what's inhabiting them, we recommend wearing rubber boots. Also, because of the risk of spreading amphibian diseases rubber boots are easier to decontaminate. If you are wearing your personal rubber boots, please wash them thoroughly before the event. With water and a brush please remove any mud on the boots particularly the sole. Amphibian viruses like Ranavirus can be present in mud particles. At the meeting place we will spray an ethanol solution on your boots as part of the decontamination protocol.

Physical Level of Difficulty: Moderate

  •  This event will involve lifting, bending, and walking on uneven surfaces. Participants will be expected to wear closed-toed shoes for the duration of the event. If you think any of the physical requirements will be problematic, please let us know.

Registration is required. Please register to receive additional information about the event.
