Save the trees, ecosystem, and this special cultural resource
Join Chuck (Weed Warrior Supervisor) and Tammy (Parks Cultural Resources Staff Member) for a non-native, invasive plant removal event at the Oakley Cabin African American Museum and Park(opens in a new tab) in Olney, MD. We will meet in front of the cabin at 3610 Brookeville Road.(opens in a new tab) (Parking is limited, so please carpool if possible).
We will focus on non-native, invasive vines and shrubs, including Asian bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica), wineberry (Rubus phoenicolasius), Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii), and multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora). Native Virginia creeper and poison ivy are also present and beneficial, so we will avoid those.
Please wear long pants that cover your ankles, long sleeves, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring gloves, pruners, small folding hand saws and/or loppers if you have them. Gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed. Please bring water to drink. Please note: Court Ordered Volunteer Hours can’t be granted through this workday.
This event is capped at 15 people.
