Save the trees and the stream valley ecosystem! Join Jesse Buff, Weed Warrior Supervisor, and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN)(opens in a new tab) for a Saturday morning non-native, invasive vine removal workday in Sligo Creek Stream Valley Park. You’ll be volunteering in Sligo Stream Valley Unit 1, in Takoma Park, around Maple Ave. You’ll receive the exact meeting location via email, after you register.
We will be working toward our goal of saving the trees by cutting English ivy (Hedera helix) and porcelainberry (Ampelopsis glandulosa var. brevipedunculata), with some Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) and Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) thrown in for good measure! Native Virginia creeper, greenbrier, grape, and poison ivy are also present and beneficial, so we will avoid those!
Please wear long pants that cover your ankles, long sleeves, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring gloves, pruners, small folding hand saws and/or loppers if you have them. Gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed. Please bring water to drink. Please note: Court Ordered Volunteer Hours can’t be granted through this workday.
This event is capped at 15 people.
This workday is pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours. Volunteers under 16 are not permitted to use tools, so if you are under 16, please email the Weed Warrior supervisor ahead of time to see whether they will have meaningful work for you to do. Volunteers 14 and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
All Parks staff and volunteers must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
All volunteers must register online on the following TWO websites, submit vaccination proof, and complete a COVID-19 Volunteer Waiver.
If you are not vaccinated or do not sign/ agree to the waiver, you cannot volunteer during a Weed Warrior Workday. You will upload your vaccination proof and complete your waiver when you create a profile in the Montgomery Parks Volunteer Database, during the online registration. Please email Corinne (WW Volunteer Coordinator) if you need a copy of the current Weed Warrior Workday COVID protocols. More details, including the exact meeting location, will be emailed to you after you register.
