MLK Day of Service in Anacostia Park

Join the Student Conservation Association and the National Park Service for a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

This even will be bringing together hundreds of volunteers for a massive cleanup of the Anacostia River. This event will kick-off the Year of the Anacostia, celebrating Anacostia Park's 100th anniversary on the waterfront. Join us to honor the legacy of Dr. King and connect the issues of social and environmental justice as we help to improve the health of DC's urban waterfront.

 

WHEN: Monday, January 15th, 9:00 am to 12:00pm. Registration & breakfast beginning at 9:00am, kickoff at 9:30. Work will conclude at 12:00.

WHERE: Anacostia Park, 1500 Anacostia Drive, Washington, DC 20020. Registration and kick-off will take place at the Skating Pavilion at 9am. A free shuttle will be provided for volunteers at the Anacostia Metro Station and will depart at 8:45am sharp from the Kiss and Ride Exit.

WHAT: Volunteers will conduct a massive cleanup of the Anacostia River, removing trash from the shoreline and invasive species from the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail to help improve the health of DC's urban waterfront.

BRING WITH YOU: Wear long pants and sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring extra layers to prepare for the cold weather! Please also bring your own water bottle for staying hydrated.

PROVIDED: SCA will supply breakfast for volunteers as well as work gloves and all project supplies.

DIRECTIONS:

BY PUBLIC TRANSIT:

Take the Green line train to Anacostia Metro Station. A free shuttle will be provided for volunteers from the Metro; look for an SCA representative at the Kiss and Ride metro exit. Please plan to be at the metro meet-up spot by 8:45 am if you plan to meet the shuttle.

BY CAR:

For a complete list of driving directions please visit the NPS website at www.nps.gov/anac/planyourvisit/directions.htm. There is plenty of free public parking in the lot at the Roller Skating Pavilion.
